The book started out when Pierre, the main character had a big problem. His father worked for a canoeing company that traded money for fur caps with the Indians. But now his father was injured his family would have no money for the winter. Pierre would have to take the job to support his family.
The first two weeks were hard for Pierre. He was not used to paddling long miles every day. He soon had blisters on his hands and his muscles ached. Then something tragic happened. La Londe, a crew member that stood up for Pierre because he was the youngest, drowned when saving the canoes from hitting a boulder. Things were quiet after La Londe’s death, because everyone of the crew liked him. The next exciting thing that happened was when La Petite and Bellegarde were attacked by Beloit. Bellegarde, being the oldest was knocked out, but La Petite knocked out Beloit. The canoes soon reached the Indian camp, where they traded the money they brought for furs. While unloading, Beloit made Pierre angry, so Pierre knocked him into the water. It solved the problem of Beloit being not nice to Pierre, because he gained respect for him. After staying in the camp for five days, they started home. Upon his homecoming, his father rejoiced. I learned that you must earn a person’s respect to get along with them. The main theme was that things happen for a reason. Pierre changed because he could now endure hardship. If you love adventure and suspense, you will love The Broken Blade.

For my book report I read The Broken Blade.
