A Win for Uconn on Senior Night
On Friday night February 25th, my dad and I went to see the last home game this season for Uconn Men’s Hockey. We just barely made it in time because it had rained earlier, so the roads had ice on them. When we arrived they were announcing the seniors. There was barely any action at all in the first period because refereeing the game were the pickiest referees that I have ever seen. At the end of the first period, there were already 7 penalties! For one of the penalties, a Uconn player got kicked out of the game. I felt bad because he was senior and it was his last home game.
The second period however, turned the tide for Uconn. Early in the period, a Uconn player made a shot on goal, which the goalie blocked but it rebounded to the side. Jordan Sims caught the rebound and shot it into the net to give Uconn a 1-0 lead. At first, my dad and I were disappointed because we thought it didn’t go in, but realized it did when the buzzer sounded. With a strong defense for the rest of the period, Uconn held the lead going into the final period.
The final period was a battle, but it was Uconn who came out on top. The period started off with a goal form senior captain Andrew Olson, who slipped the puck in the side of the net when the goalie wasn’t looking to give Uconn the 2-0 lead. AIC scored with 51 seconds remaining in the game but Uconn still won 2-1. Despite the close ending, I had a great time!
A Big Win For Uconn!
On Saturday Night, February 19, my dad, me, and five of our friends went to get pizza then we went to a Uconn Hockey game. We had pizza at Red Rock and then just talked until it was time to head to the rink. It wasn’t cold inside and I only needed my coat. When the game got started, the action started quickly as Uconn scored in the first three minutes, but Bentley tied the game less than a minute later. A few minutes later the score was 2-2. Uconn took the lead when a shot was made on the Bentley net and was saved, but it went up into the air. Jordan Sims knocked it up higher and the Bentley goalie caught it, but dropped it in the net. We were worried that they wouldn’t count it, but a couple minutes later, the score changed to Uconn 3, Bentley 2.
During the first intermission, my friend Alex got to go on the ice. Him and his contestant were neck and neck until Alex had trouble putting on the gloves. The second period started off great for Uconn as they scored a goal early in the period. Since they scored, the faceoff was played at center ice. It was won by Uconn’s Jeff Saphiea, who handed it over to Corey Jendras, who passed it to a Uconn player who scored to give Uconn back-back goals and a 5-2 lead! Bentley would score before the period ended, but Uconn still had the lead.
The third period was uneventful, until Bentley scored with 15 seconds remaining in the game. But Uconn scored with 1 second remaining in the game, with a goal from Jordan Sims, to make the final score 6-4 in favor of Uconn. We all had a lot of fun that night, but with Uconn winning, the night was even better.
An Outdoor Game for Connecticut Hockey
On Sunday, February 13, a freezing cold day with a very gusty wind, my family and I went to a historical outdoor hockey game between the Connecticut Huskies and the Sacred Heart Pioneers. Only the following helped me survive the cold weather through the game: a seat warmer, a blanket, and hot chocolate. The first period was rough as Sacred Heart started playing a very rough game, because they wanted revenge because Uconn won on Friday 4-2. Sacred Heart even tried to take out Uconn’s goalie Garret Bartus. In the first period Sacred Heart outshot Uconn. Despite getting outshot in the first period, Uconn went into the first intermission with a 1-0 edge. Justin Hernandez picked the puck up on the boards and passed it over to Captain Andrew Olson, who then shot it through the goalie’s legs from center ice.
In the second period, the Uconn Huskies paid the pioneers back for playing dirty. By the end of the first ten minutes of the second period, Sacred Heart had only one shot on net. But Sacred Heart came back to score a power-play goal on Uconn to tie the game at 1-1. Despite the tying goal, Uconn came back less than a minute later and scored. After Sacred Heart had scored, the faceoff was played at center ice. Uconn won the faceoff and made a shot. Then the faceoff was played in front of the Sacred Heart goalie, where it was won by Cole Schneider who shot the puck between the goalie and the post to give Uconn a 2-1 lead.
In the third period Sacred Heart played hard, trying to tie the game up, but the stellar goaltending of Garret Bartus allowed Sacred Heart no goals in the period. About half-way through the period though Uconn did score. Cole Schneider received a pass and shot it through the goalie’s legs to give Uconn the 3-1 win. With the win Uconn’s record is now 10-16-4. Between Uconn winning, the Sacred Heart and Uconn bands being there, along with the Sacred Heart and Whalers Mascots, we all had a great time, besides our toes freezing!
The Broken Blade
For my book report I read The Broken Blade. The book started out when Pierre, the main character had a big problem. His father worked for a canoeing company that traded money for fur caps with the Indians. But now his father was injured his family would have no money for the winter. Pierre would have to take the job to support his family.
The first two weeks were hard for Pierre. He was not used to paddling long miles every day. He soon had blisters on his hands and his muscles ached. Then something tragic happened. La Londe, a crew member that stood up for Pierre because he was the youngest, drowned when saving the canoes from hitting a boulder. Things were quiet after La Londe’s death, because everyone of the crew liked him. The next exciting thing that happened was when La Petite and Bellegarde were attacked by Beloit. Bellegarde, being the oldest was knocked out, but La Petite knocked out Beloit. The canoes soon reached the Indian camp, where they traded the money they brought for furs. While unloading, Beloit made Pierre angry, so Pierre knocked him into the water. It solved the problem of Beloit being not nice to Pierre, because he gained respect for him. After staying in the camp for five days, they started home. Upon his homecoming, his father rejoiced. I learned that you must earn a person’s respect to get along with them. The main theme was that things happen for a reason. Pierre changed because he could now endure hardship. If you love adventure and suspense, you will love The Broken Blade.
A Close win at UCONN!
The Con
necticut Huskies defeated the Holy Cross Crusaders, 2-1, in the Uconn Hockey classic first round. The game started out evenly, with each team having the same amount of shots. But then, early in the first period, holy cross scored to get a 1-0 lead. The Huskies had a great chance when Andrew Olson shot the puck on net that was blocked, and slid in front of the wide open net, but no one was there to get it.
The second period was very uneventful. Holy Cross out shot Connecticut by only three in the second. Although the second was uneventful, something bad happened. Uconn player Brian Reagan got his arm smashed against the wall when he tried to spin out of a check. I think he might have broken his arm, because I never saw him on the ice again.
The third period was what turned the tide for the Huskies. Six minutes into the third period, Uconn scored. Cole Schneider received a pass behind the net and made a shot. Andrew Olson caught the rebound and fired it underneath the goalie as he tried to land on it, to tie the score. Eight minutes later Uconn put home the Game-winning goal. Jeff Saphiea won the face-off and passed it over to Corey Jendras who quickly put it in the net. Early in the third, Grant Scott took the puck in the chest. He didn’t come on the ice again. UConn officially won the game when Andrew Olson won the face-off putting the puck over the blue line. This was very suspenseful because with four seconds left Holy Cross made a shot. Everyone thought they scored, but Garret Bartus saved it. Uconn advances to the championship to play Princeton.
The Light in the Forest
For my book report, I read The Light in the Forest. The book started out when True son, the main character, had been captured by the Indians when he was four. Now he was fifteen, and had to be returned to the whites. He was upset to be leaving the Indians, which he believed to be his real family.
During his trip to go back to the whites, his Indian cousin, Half Arrow kept him company. After two days of travel to Pennsylvania, Half Arrow left him. When they reached the town, True Son and the other whites that had been captured by the Indians, stood to wait for someone to claim them. True Son was claimed by a man who came for him in the afternoon. True Son disliked his new home because it was enclosed and stuffy. Once, he even tried to escape but was caught by his Father and his Uncle. One night, an Indian peered through the window but his aunt scared him off. As soon as the coast was clear, he jumped out the window and found his Indian cousin, Half Arrow! The two boys embraced but their embrace was short. Half Arrow told him that their friend, Little Crane, had been scalped. And the person that did it was True Son’s uncle! When True Son went to ask his Uncle Wilse why he had scalped Little Crane, his uncle grabbed him thinking he was running away. On True Son’s call for help, Half Arrow set True Son free. Then together, they knocked him out to get away.
In the morning, the two boys escaped into the woods. When they were about half way back to the Indian village, they stopped. For three days they stayed in the woods to hunt and fish. On their return, they were welcomed greatly and True Son Finally felt happy. But soon, the story of Little Crane’s death made his relatives angry. So soon a war party was formed which included: True Son, his Indian Father, Half Arrow and his Father. Very soon, they got scalps from people who lived in a cabin in the woods. True Son was happy was happy to get revenge for Little Crane’s death. Finally, the party decided to use True Son as bait to catch people from an in-coming boat. But when the boat approached, True Son warned the people on the boat because he thought he saw his family. Realizing the betrayal, the Indians decided to burn him. But his Indian father came to his aid. Although, his father said he would have to go back to the whites. But this time, True Son did it happily. He had finally realized who his real family was.
I think the main point of the book was that you should not always believe everything. For example, True Son believed he was an Indian but this was not true. When reading the book, I felt sad when True Son had to leave his Indian family because he was sad. I learned that when a member of an Indian family died, they would adopt a white person in their place. If you’re thinking of reading The Light in the Forest, I highly recommend it! It’s a great book!
Happy Thanksgiving
The first thanksgiving dates back to of 1620 when the pilgrims escaped religious persecution in England. They fled to the Netherlands, where they stayed for some amount of time, but soon got to finance a pilgrimage to North America. The voyage lasted 12 weeks and when they reached Plymouth rock, the date was December 11, 1620. During that winter, they lost about half of the 102 pilgrims, because of the winter and the harsh conditions on their ship, the Mayflower. After the winter, the pilgrims had very little hope of survival.
In the spring, the pilgrims voted to stay, and not return to England. During that spring, they met some Indians that helped them survive and plant crops. During that fall, the harvest was a bountiful one. The pilgrims celebrated the first thanksgiving, thanking God for surviving in the wilderness and for the bountiful harvest. 91 Indians celebrated the feast with the pilgrims. For the feast they had fish, berries, watercress, lobster, dried fruit, clams, venison, plums, and boiled pumpkin. They also made fried bread from the corn they had produced.
The first thanksgiving lasted three days. On the third day, Governor Bradford sent four men fowling. They came back with wild ducks and and geese. The second Thanksgiving would be celebrated 55 years later. This next thanksgiving was celebrated to show thanks for the good fortune of seeing the colony of Charleston, Mass., established. It was celebrated on June 29, 1676.
The next Thanksgiving was celebrated one hundred years later. This time, all thirteen colonies celebrated in the feast. It was celebrated in October, due to the victory over the British at Saratoga. In 1789, George Washington proclaimed a national day of thanks, although some opposed it. In 1863, President Lincoln made the last Thursday in November a national day of thanks. Every president after Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanks on the same date. But in 1941, Congress established Thanksgiving as a national holiday, to be celebrated every fourth Thursday of November.
To me Thanksgiving means a day we should be thankful for everything you have. You should count all your blessings more than you would regularly. I’m thankful for a good family, good food, clothing and a roof over my head. I also think that Thanksgiving means a day to be kind to everyone. You should be kind regularly but you should be extra kind on Thanksgiving. That’s what Thanksgiving means to me.
A Winning Day at Uconn Hockey
On Saturday, I went to an Uconn Hockey game. They were playing AIC. Only thirty seconds into the game AIC scored. The Huskies tied the game when Chris Waterstradt scooped up the puck from the neutral zone and shot the puck into the top left hand corner.
The Huskies took the lead only a few minutes later with a goal by Jordan Sims. But soon, AIC pulled even when they tied the game at 2-all. Despite that tying goal, the Huskies scored to take a 3-2 lead going into the first intermission. The goal was scored by captain Andrew Olson, who received a pass that he fired into the wide open right handed side of the net.
During the first intermission, they had a race to see who could put on an Uconn hockey jersey, hockey gloves, pick up a hockey stick and put the puck in the net first. I was one of the two people picked. My contestant and I were neck and neck, but I couldn’t pick up the hockey stick! When I finally picked up the hockey stick, I easily put the puck in the net.
The second period was very uneventful, as there was only one goal scored. This goal was scored by AIC, to tie the game at 3-3. The third period, however, was exciting. Uconn took a 4-3 lead when a goal was scored seven minutes in. The Huskies took a 5-3 lead only two minutes later, when Miles Winter, who was standing in front of the wide open left side, received a pass that was easily tapped in.
With only three tenths of a second left in the game, AIC scored. But only three tenths of a second later, Uconn came out with a 5-4 win. Between Uconn winning and me getting to go on the ice, I had a great time!
“The Dragons Boy” by Jane Yolen
For my book report, I read The Dragon’s Boy. The book started off when Artos was searching for Sir Ector’s lost blood hound. While searching for the dog, Artos realized that the dog must have gone home and now Artos was lost. He was near the High Tor, so he decided to take a look around. When he started to climb, he stumbled upon a cave where he found a dragon!
At first, he was afraid of the dragon. Then when the dragon started teaching him the game of wisdom, he grew fond of the dragon. With his new wisdom growing, he made new friends. They’re names were Cai, Lancolot, and Bedvere, the sons of Sir Ector. He then went to a fair in another town with them, where they had a grand time. When they came back to the castle, Sir Ector was back from a hunt, but became sick from the cold weather.
As soon as Artos got back, he went to see the dragon in his cave on the High Tor. When he came back to the cave, he found out that the dragon was dying. But then in the back of the cave, he saw Old Linn, who also lived in the castle. Artos then realized that the dragon was a robot that Old Linn controlled. At first Artos was mad at Old Linn, but then he realized Old Linn had taught him wisdom and forgot his anger.
The conclusion is that Old Linn became like a father to Artos. Old Linn gave Artos wisdom; he knew that Old Linn was the closest thing he had to a father. I rate this book with five stars because it is fun and full of suspense! I learned that wisdom is a very tricky thing to learn. I think the author is trying to say that wisdom is more important than riches and jewels.
