George Joseph Saba

George J Saba, 66, 189 W Main St., died at 10:12 p.m. Tuesday at Alliance Health Care Center, following an extended illness.

Mr. Saba was the owner of Saba Saveway, a market on Main Street, from 1947 to 1962. From 1962 until he retired in 1972, he was produce coordinator for Perskey’s and Clarkins food stores.

He was born Oct. 7, 1918, in Dubois, Pa., to Isber and Ramza Kazhal Saba, and had lived in Alliance since 1946.

Mr. Saba was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a first sergeant with the 82nd Airborne Division. He received the Good Conduct Medal.

A member of Third and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, he was a member of Joseph P. Conlon Fourth Degree Assembly, and served as district marshal of Hennepin Province of the Eastern Ohio Distinct K. of C.

Mr. Saba was a member and lay minister of Regina Coeli Catholic Church. He started the martial arts program at the YMCA in 1965, and served as its director until his death. Earlier this year, he received the Y’s Service to Youth award.

Mr. Saba was also a member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 50, American Legion Post 168, B.P.O. Elks Lodge 467, United Commercial Travelers, Fraternal Order of Police Associates, Police Reserve of Alliance, and the U.S. Branch of the Hakko-Ryu JuJitsu Federation.

His wife, Freda, died Jan 22, 1977.

Mr. Saba is survived by a son, Dr. George Saba of San Francisco, and two brothers, William and Henry, both of Akron. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Clara and Marie, and three brothers, Mitchell, Fred and Edward.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Regina Coeli Church, with the Rev. Paul Tobin officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Akron.

Friends may call 7 to 9 this evening at Sharer-Stirling Funeral Home, where DAV services will be conducted at 6:45 this evening.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Regina Coeli Church.

Mrs. Saba was born in St. Louis, Mo., and resided in Cuyahoga Falls for the past 33 years, moving there from Akron. She retired in 1981 from the City of Cuyahoga Fall Building and Zoning Department as an administrative assistant with 23 years service. She was a member of the Chapel of Prayer Baptist Church, the Cuyahoga Falls Business and Professional Women, the Cuyahoga Falls Women’s Club, Women in Construction, and the Daughters of Scotia.

She is survived by daughters, Jean of Munroe Falls, Judith of Cuyahoga Falls; and sister, Dorothy O’Brien of St. Louis, Mo.

My Uncles Mitchell, Bill and Eddie along with my Aunt Clara never married. They lived together in a house in Akron. First in the family house on Euclid avenue and then on Dorchester.

 

Isber and Ramza were residing at 237 Spruce Alley, DuBois at the time of Mitchell’s birth.

 

Birth Record for Mitchell lists him as Mick, father as Mick, and mother as Reanza Saba.
